Budget cuts for Waterloo schools

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) - It's been hard for all state agencies to cut 10-percent from their budgets, especially when the education of Iowa's young people is on the line.

The Waterloo School District needs to cut 4 million dollars from next year's budget, and if the economy continues to go south, the district may have to cut 9 million.

Recommendations were made Monday night that would cut from a number of areas including transportation, custodial, early retirement, and school consolidation.

Superintendent Gary Norris, says they're taking precautions now, to protect student education in the future. "We will do anything we can do at almost any cost to protect their education so moms and dads can be completely comfortable that whatever we do, we're going to do through proper management," said Dr. Norris.

The budget proposal will now go to the school board for a vote. Some cuts won't take effect until next fall, while others will have an immediate impact.
