CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- The No. 20 University of Northern Iowa volleyball team will face Washington State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Fri., Dec. 4 at 4:30 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb. This is the 15th overall and fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Panthers, who are 11-14 in NCAA Tournament matches.
The Panthers (30-2, 18-0 MVC) and Washington State (18-12, 6-12 Pac-10) last met in the Sweet Sixteen in 2002, with the Cougars claiming a 3-0 victory.
The Panthers punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament when they beat Wichita State 3-1 on Saturday to earn their 14th Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship. The Shockers also picked up a tournament bid, playing Saint Louis at Iowa State on Friday.
UNI enters the tournament as the MVC regular-season and tournament champion. The Panthers have won their last 28 matches.
Washington State topped No. 4 Washington on Oct. 23, but the Cougars have lost eight of their 10 matches since then. Seven of those losses came against nationally-ranked teams, however. The Cougars finished eighth in the Pac-10.
The winner of Friday's match will take on the winner of the match between 10th-seeded Nebraska, the host team, and Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 5 p.m.
