WATERLOO (KWWL) -- FEMA announced Wednesday it has pushed back the day it will begin collecting rent from those still living in FEMA provided temporary housing. Rent collection will begin January 1, 2010.
FEMA said this will allow those still living in the mobile homes an additional month of rent-free transitional assistance.
Earlier this month, Iowa officials requested rent collection be waived until January.
Actual rent for each household will be determined on a case-by-case basis. It will be based on household income, composition, number of bedrooms and the location of the mobile home. Rental payments will not exceed the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's 2008 Fair Market Rate (FMR) for each locality where a temporary housing unit is placed.
On December 1, 2009, FEMA will begin sending notifications to households remaining in a temporary housing unit outlining their monthly payment.
