Inmate accused of damaging jail fire sprinkler

MONTROSE, Iowa (AP) -- An inmate at the Lee County jail in Montrose has been accused of damaging the jail's fire sprinkler system, causing more than a dozen inmates to be evacuated.

Sheriff Buck Jones says Cody Lutzen, of Ames, is charged with criminal mischief. Lutzen, who was being held in the Lee County jail on a probation violation, is accused of damaging the sprinkler head in his cell Friday night.

The sheriff says 17 inmates were moved from the general population block to an indoor recreation center while officials located and fixed the problems.

Jones says Lutzen was treated after he was sprayed in the face with air and water. Another inmate in the cell also was treated after he inhaled compressed air.
