VINTON (KWWL) -- The Vinton Fire Department was called to 1110 4th Avenue in Vinton at around 9:30 a.m. Monday morning after a passerby noticed smoke coming from the home.

The fire chief, Gary McKenna says they believe a gas wall furnace either malfunctioned, or something near the furnace caught fire.

The residents of the home was not home at the time but two dogs inside the home died.

McKenna says his crew was on scene for about an hour and no firefighters were injured.

He says the home suffered mostly smoke and heat damage.

McKenna was not able to put a dollar estimate on the damage.

The Red Cross says they helped an adult and four children with shelter and clothing as a result of the fire.
