DES MOINES (KWWL)--  A Waverly volunteer firefighter and a Bremer County Deputy will be honored for their heroic acts.

Firefighter Jim McKenzie and Bremer County Deputy Sean Heartman will receive The Sullivan Brothers Award for Valor at a ceremony in Des Moines Thursday.

Both are being honored for their actions on October 21, 2008, at a house fire in rural Waverly.

The award is giving to peace officers and firefighters, who, while serving in an official capacity, distinguished themselves by performance of a heroic act in excess of normal demands where the person was fully aware of the threat to his or her safety.
