Money coming to buyout flooded homes

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- $150 million in federal funds is being made available to buyout more than 1,300 flood damaged homes across the state.

Governor Chet Culver announced today that this first round of money would help 20 cities and counties buyout 1,352 damaged homes that are not eligible for FEMA buyouts.

The money is part of the $516.7 million in Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery Funds.

This first round covers homes that are in the 100-year flood plain, pose a health and safety concern to the community or were found to be substantially damaged.

Governor Culver siad, "The announcement of funding for home buyouts is a critically important step forward in the flood recovery process.  However, this is just the beginning of the buyout process. The state looks forward to working with the cities and counties to ensure Iowans can move forward with buyouts in an efficient manner."
