Fayette County Sheriff Marty Fisher says the teenager died Saturday and his office is investigating. A name and cause of death was not released.
The Murdoch Funeral Home has posted the obituary of 14 year-old Derek Knibbe.
Knibbe was an eighth grader at Starmont Middle School. Superintendent Matt O'Loughlin says counselors are available today to talk with students about the death.
"We've been in contact with the family, they're a very tight-knit family. They're bonding together and we as a school family are bonding together as well," O'Loughlin said.
Counselors will remain at the school for the rest of the week and into next week if needed.
While police have not released a cause of death, parents in the district tell us the school sent home a note saying it was an accidental death.
Visitation is set for Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home in Manchester. The funeral is Friday morning at 10:30 at Manchester United Methodist Church.
