Dubuque Police Chief Candidate Pool Narrowed to Five

Dubuque (KWWL) -- Dubuque City Manager Michael Van Milligen announced today that the city has selected five finalists in their search for a new police chief.

They are Craig Berte, Mark Dalsing, Todd Miller, Michael Tupper and Michael Venema.

Craig Berte is currently Captain of Support Services for the Cedar Falls Police Department.  He has been with the Cedar Falls department since 1991 and has a degree in Criminology from the University of Northern Iowa.  He has a graduate degree in justice Administration from the University of Louisville.

Mark Dalsing is currently a captain with the Dubuque Police Department. He started with the Dubuque department in 1989, was promoted to Corporal in 1999, Lieutenant in 2003 and then Captain of the Criminal Investigation Division in 2006.  Dalsing has a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from the Univeristy of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Todd Miller was most recently the police chief for the City of Terrell, Texas.  He served in that position from 2003 to 2008.  Before that, he was the chief of police in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Willmar, Minnesota, Broadhead, Wisconsin, Monona, Iowa and McGreger, Iowa. He has a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a master's degree in management from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Michael Tupper has served as the police chief for the City of Nevada since 2004.  He previously worked for the Ottumwa Police Department. He has a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Buena Vista University-Ottumwa Campus.

Michael Venema is currently a Lieutenant with the Davenport Police Department. He has been with the department since 1985.  He has a bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement Administration and a master's degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois.

The five candidates will go through an extensive two-day interview with City of Dubuque department managers, the police department's senior management team, members of the Dubuque Community Advisory Panel, neighborhood organization presidents, the board of directors of the Multicultural Family Center, and representatives from several Dubuque agencies and organizations.   

The process will begin in early November and should conclude in late December.

The City Manager will then appoint the new chief which is subject to approval by the City Council.
