PALO, Iowa (AP) - Authorities in Linn County say vandals have hit an historic rural cemetery near Palo, damaging headstones.
Officials aren't sure when the vandalism happened, but the Linn County Sheriff's Office believes the vandals visited the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, once known as Lewis Bottom Cemetery, sometime this past weekend.
Graves in the cemetery date back to 1841, when the area was first settled.
The damage was spotted by Eloise Dennis who says many members of her family have been buried at the cemetery over the past 150 years.
Dennis says someone knocked over about twenty tombstones and even tried to dig some of the markers out of the ground.
