Attorney says Becker not competent to stand trial

Posted:

BUTLER COUNTY (KWWL) -- An application filed Tuesday morning claims Mark Becker is not competent to stand trial.

Becker is charged with 1st degree murder in the death of legendary Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas.

The application says Becker was evaluated by Dr. Dan Rogers, an expert retained by the defense. Becker's attorney claims there are "specific facts showing the Defendant's mental disorder," and that condition would keep him from "understanding the proceedings or assisting effectively in his defense."

According to the court document, the doctor says Becker suffers from hallucinations and has difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy.

According to the Iowa Attorney General's Office, the prosecutors are expected to respond with a request for a separate psychological evaluation.
