Iowa National Guard looks for volunteers for emergency drill

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Iowa National Guard is looking for about 150 civilians to participate in a mass disaster exercise in Des Moines this month. The National Guard from four states will be honing their emergency response skills.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Iowa Board of Pharmacy has rejected arguments from advocates who want to use marijuana for medical purposes. The board, which took up the issue yesterday, cited a lack of scientific evidence, and said just because other states allow it doesn't mean Iowa should.

CHILLICOTHE, Iowa (AP) -- Officials say the tracks are opened but cleanup continues after a freight train derailment near Chillicothe (chili-KAHTH'-ee) in southeast Iowa. A BNSF spokesman says 16 cars on a 122-car train derailed early Saturday. They were carrying coal.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A gnat attack is under way in Iowa. Experts says last year's record flooding left behind more breeding ground for black flies, also called buffalo gnats. The flies -- and they're painful bite -- are usually gone around mid-June.
