Dubuque (KWWL) - A new stoplight in front of a Dubuque High School is aimed at increasing student safety.
The lights turned on for the first time at a new crosswalk and traffic light system on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of Hempstead High School Monday. It's part of safety measures taken after two students were hit by a car in front of the school in September 2007.
15-year-old Hempstead student, Lauren Schmidt was killed and the other student seriously hurt. Other changes made in front of the school; a reduced speed limit, reducing the number of lanes, and flashing lights.
